A pond lily highlights the marshes of the Copper River Delta in the Chugach National Forest in Alaska during the summer when they blossom in a vibrant yellow color. The pond lily needs the moist conditions to thrive along with a regular intake of sun.
In the Copper River Delta, the yellow pond lily spans across the surface of the water growing to a height of about 6 inches. Before the Yellow Pond Lily blossoms, the light green leaves remain below the surface of the water eventually rising as summer nears.
The flowers sit on the surface where they show off their broad, fleshy yellow sepals and their center flask-shaped pod of seeds. The pond lily has a strong brandy-like scent which lures in pollinating insects. The leaves of the yellow pond lily provides shade during the summer months for many different types of insects and fish and the seeds provide nourishment for other types of animals.
These wildflowers are very important to the ecosystem and look beautiful when the entire wetlands of the Copper River Delta are blanketed in yellow.
