The female and male species of the Yellow-headed Blackbird are easily determined as the male has a bright yellow hood with a black body and a patch of white on the wings which is only visible while the bird is in flight. The female is much duller in color with yellow on its throat and chest, grayish-brown covering on the rest of its plumage except for the white streaks down its breast.
Both the female and males species will grow to be about 9.5 inches in length with very pointed black bills. During the warmer summer months, a Yellow-headed Blackbird will reside around the freshwater marshes but as winter approaches, fields, pasture and cultivated land is their choice of homes.
