A cute picture of this Yellow-bellied Marmot in Yellowstone National Park in the USA was fairly easy to take as the model sat perfectly still. The marmot prefers areas which are located at an elevation of about 6,500 feet in meadows, pastures and rocky cliffs as this is a safe place to build a burrow.
The Yellow-bellied Marmot becomes quite a bit heavier and rounder in the fall as it prepares for hibernation during the winter. On the average, a marmot weighs between 5 and 11 pounds, the male being heavier than the female and both species have yellow speckles on either side of their neck. White patches are visible between their eyes and around their mouths and they are yellowish brown in color with a slightly different hue on their bellies.
The best time to spot a Yellow-bellied Marmot in Yellowstone National Park is during the day when most of their activity takes place. As September nears, the Yellow-bellied Marmot will take to its winter burrow which is usually 5-7 meters deep, where it will hibernate till May.
A very cute animal in the wilderness of Yellowstone National Park but many find the marmot to be a pest if residing around agricultural or farming areas.
