Perched upon the vibrant purple colored flowers in Texas Hill Country in Comfort, Texas, the wings on a Wood Satyr butterfly remain closed. In the early morning hours, later in the afternoon or on overcast days, the Wood Satyr will fully open its wings while perching.
On the wings of the butterfly, the markings are very distinct showing off its yellow rimmed eye spots on both the light brown colored hind and forewings. The wingspan on the Wood Satyr spans between 1 1/2 to 1 7/8 inches and they are found in areas of grassy woods and openings and old fields.
The Wood Satyr does not frequent vibrant colored flowers for nectar like many other types of butterflies, instead they drink water from puddles and feed on sap, rotting fruit and animal droppings.
