The descent down the mountain during the Mt. Marathon Race which takes place every fourth of July, creates a steep and slippery surface for the participants. Running the first half of the race is intense as you are climbing up the mountain, but the downhill run towards the finish can be just as hard and extremely dangerous when their speed increases.
A total of 900 participants are allowed to enter the Mt. Marathon Race in Seward, Alaska, 350 being men, 350 women and 200 junior racers. The length of the race is about 3.1 miles which starts in downtown Seward, heading up to the top of Mt. Marathon which stands at 3,022 feet and ending back in Seward.
Crowds of people gather for this race every year which is a total of about 45 minutes for the top competitors. Many who cross the finish line are bruised, bleeding and scarred from the rough terrain these people run over.
