A lone coyote walks across the fresh snow that has adorned Yellowstone National Park afer a winter storm. The coyote will occasionally travel in a large pack, but unlike their cousins, the Gray Wolf, they usually hunt for their prey in pairs.
The coyote has a gray/yellow/brown shaded coat of fur with its underparts being mostly white and they grow to be between 30-34 inches in length with a large gap in weight being anywhere from 15-45 pounds. There are 19 subspecies of coyotes, all of them which vary a little in size and color but they all use howling as a form of communication.
During the winter months in Yellowstone National Park, the coyote will mainly feed on the decaying flesh of dead animals but throughout the remainder of the year, they will prey on almost anything.
