Gray wolves were placed on the endangered species list throughout the eastern and western regions of the USA in 2003, and not long after, the status of gray wolves changed to threatened. For approximately 70 years, gray wolves were not seen in Yellowstone National Park but in 1995, about 24 were captured and set free in the wilderness.
The wolves made an exceptional recovery and when touring through Yellowstone Park, especially in the Lamar Valley, packs of wolves can be seen or heard howling in the distance. The gray wolves can be various shades of either gray, tan, black or pure white and in the winter season, people can easily miss seeing a wolf against the snow covered landscape.
