A very cold, winter night in the wilderness of the mountains near Matanuska Glacier in Alaska, leaves the trees blanketed with hoarfrost. A full moon sits just above the trees highlighting the winter landscape.
The deposit of ice crystals, known as hoarfrost, can form on solid objects such as trees, plants, poles and fences and can be so thick it appears as snow. The crystalline structures which grow in a variety of shapes come from water vapor which has evaporated from liquid droplets that were left hanging in the air.
Matanuska Glacier is the largest glacier in Alaska easily reached by car in about 2 hours from Anchorage. A 15 to 20 minute hike is required when arriving in order to reach the ice. The trek is well worth it especially when a full moon is present over this type of Alaskan winter wonderland.
