Sitting on a White Spruce tree at the northern edge of a Boreal Forest in the Central Brooks Range in Alaska, USA, a Spruce Grouse stays on alert as it spots the photographer. Boreal forests across Alaska and Canada are prime breeding areas for these birds where they nest on the ground in the dense growth.
During the summer months in the Central Brooks Range in Alaska, the Spruce Grouse will feed on berries, green plants and a variety of insects. As winter arrives, they forage on the ground or in the trees, a favorite being the White Spruce tree, where their diet consists of the needles.
A female Spruce Grouse has the mottled brown plumage with areas on their underparts being white and dark colored bars. Their coloring provides excellent camouflage during the warmer seasons and they tend not to be as skittish as they are in the winter when their hiding areas become bare.
