Millions of shorebirds are seen on the mudflats on the Copper River Delta in Alaska, USA during the annual spring migration with this picture showing a large flock of Western Sandpiper birds. The mudflats are their favorite place to congregate during their migration where they spends hours foraging.
The Western Sandpiper adults have dark legs and a short, dark bill with a mixture of brown hues on the top of their plumage and white along their chest and underneath. As winter arrives, their plumage becomes gray in color which begins to change in early Autumn.
Millions of Western Sandpipers make up the population in North America and when a flock meets along the mudflats in the Copper River Delta, the numbers seem endless. Alaska carries the biggest population when the Western Sandpipers breed and during the Spring, the entire flock can be seen walking with their heads in the water where they feed.
