The Kodiak National Wildlife Refuge in Alaska, USA is an area which was established to conserve various species of wildlife and here a Brown Bear walking through the shallow water with her cubs is a picture worth remembering. The mother Brown Bear ensures that her cubs will be safe on their adventure through the water which barely covers the mother's feet but nearly comes up to the cub's heads.
The cubs are born in the den during the winter and leave their den for the first time in the spring where they move to lower elevations to feed. Throughout the summer, the bears seem to linger around the water especially when the salmon becomes available and the mother teaches the cubs the tricks to surviving in the wild.
These cubs will remain with their mother until they are about 2-3 years old when they have been taught all the necessary survival techniques. The Brown Bear is usually a solitary animal unless having cubs in tow or when the food is concentrated in small areas and then a complex language is used amongst them to ensure each one gets their fill.
Since 1941, the Kodiak National Wildlife Refuge has provided a habitat for various animals and is now home to about 3,000 Brown Bears. People hiking through the backcountry of this refuge should be bear safe as this is their home and one in which humans intrude upon while exploring the Kodiak National Wildlife Refuge in Alaska, USA.
