At one time, wasps were uncommon to see in regions of Alaska, USA but as the climate changes and warms up, the number of wasps are rapidly increasing. Along the Harding Icefield Trail in the Chugach National Forest, hikers spot a large nest which has been built on a tree branch.
The female wasps start to build a small nest when spring arrives and then the first generation of female workers care for the young while increasing the size of the nest. The nest is made from chewed wood fibers mixed in with saliva and the wasps make a chemical which keeps ants out of their nest.
If the nest is disturbed, these type of wasps which grow to be about 16-20 mm in length with a black body and bright yellow markings on its head, thorax, legs and across its abdominal areas, can be extremely viscous with their stings.
These hikers decided that taking a picture of the wasps nest while hiking along the Harding Icefield trail in the Chugach National Forest would be the best solution over getting to close to the nest.
