An aerial view of the caldera atop Mt. Katmai in Katmai National Park in Alaska, USA shows how it has been filled with aqua colored water where large ice sheets blanket the surface. The caldera was formed after the 1912 eruption of Mt. Novarupta when magma drained beneath the mountain helping in the collapse of the summit of Mt. Katmai.
The lake in the volcano caldera reaches an elevation of approximately 4,200 feet with the edges surrounding the water being 6,716 feet high. Along the sides of the caldera, small glaciers have formed and as the glaciers retreat, ice sheets break away and remain on the water until they slowly thaw.
The aerial view of this volcano gives visitors to Alaska a breathtaking view of the lake in the caldera where snow, ice and glaciers mantle it.
