An immature Violet-green Swallow keeps an eye on the camera as it sits motionless on the sharp peak of a rock at Yellowstone Lake in Wyoming, USA. The juvenile birds still have brown coloring on the upper parts of their plumage but the adult birds are a green velvet hue with white underparts. In this picture, you can see the plumage becoming green in areas, but there are still areas which have a brown tinge to it.
The Violet-green Swallow will breed in areas which are partially open, nesting in trees or rock crevices. When searching for food, they tend to fly in flocks where they seek out a variety of insects such as mosquitos, butterflies and moths.
