The bright red and brown hues on this Vermilion Flycatcher stand out as this small bird has found a perch at the top of a tree in Texas Hill Country near Comfort, Texas in the USA. Both the female and male species grow to be about 7" in length but the male is much more colorful with its red and brown shades while the female has a dark grey upperside and peach colored belly.
Found throughout the southwestern United States, Central America, South America, Argentina and in the Galapagos Islands, the Vermilion Flycatcher feeds on insects like flies, grasshoppers and beetles. With a nest made of twigs, stems and roots, the female Vermilion Flycatcher will lay 2-3 eggs which are incubated for approximately 2 weeks. After 15 days or so, the young birds will be able to leave their nest and perch themselves on the tops of the tree branches.
The Vermilion Flycatcher will build its nests in willows, oaks, cottonwoods, mesquites and sycamores which line streams or waterways. The temperate climate in Texas Hill Country near Comfort, Texas is ideal for these cute little birds and their families.
