As this musher races across the frozen landscape with his sled dog team towards the coastal shores of the Bering Sea in Alaska, USA, the sky clears and glows in a bright yellow/orange hue bringing with it the promise of a beautiful winter day. This stunning spot along the Iditarod trail is in Unalakleet, Alaska where it travels along the coastal shores of the Bering Sea and the Unalakleet River with trees, tundra and hills encompassing the area.
The lighting reflects off the frozen landscape creating some beautiful scenery for this musher who goes by the name of Robert Sorlie. He has raced in the Iditarod since 2002 and won the race with his sled dog team in 2003 and again in 2005.
Unalakleet is the 1st checkpoint on the Norton Sound along the Iditarod trail which is 851 miles from the start in Anchorage, Alaska. The first musher and sled dog team to reach this checkpoint is given the Gold Coast Award and $2,500 in gold nuggets.
