Two Sea Otters find themselves a nice resting area for sunning to regulate their body temperatures atop the icebergs in Harriman Fiord in Prince Williams Sound, Alaska. The two of them peer at the photographer, with their cute little faces surrounded by lighter colored fur than the rest of their body. They have a thick coat of fur for staying warm, but a little sunning also spells some relief from these frigid waters.
Sea Otters generally live in the coastal waters in approximately 50 to 75 feet of water and do not travel more than about a kilometer off shore. In the Harriman Fiord in Prince William Sound, their range is limited due to the ice pack. Between 100,000 to 125,000 Sea Otters once resided around Alaska, but the population tragically declined in 1989 after Prince William Sound was hit by the oil spill from the Exxon Valdez. Approximately 90 percent of the world's sea otters reside in the coastal waters of Alaska, USA.
