Bighorn Sheep usually like to find rocky ledges and rugged terrain to keep themselves protected, but these two adult sheep decide it is time for battle atop the cliff in Yellowstone National Park. Both these male bighorn sheep have well developed horns which are used for defending predators or to battle amongst themselves for control of a group of females.
As the battle goes on, these two adult sheep may be seen running at each other and crashing head first creating a large noise like that of a gun shot. They can often reach speeds of 20 miles per hour with some battles lasting as long as 25 hours. One never knows which of the two male adults will concede first but two advantages for sheep while battling is their age and their horn size.
An adult male Bighorn Sheep will measure about 160-180 centimeters in length and weigh about 119-127 kilograms with the horns being as much as 14 kilograms. These horns can tell a story about each animal such as the age, health and the fights he has been in over the years.
The Bighorn Sheep in Yellowstone National Park are often hard to find as they like to keep to themselves atop the cliffs and on the steep hillsides. Most often they are seen from Mammoth to Gardiner and in the Lamar Valley in Yellowstone National Park.
