Swimming peacefully in a pond in Denali State Park in Alaska, USA, two Trumpeter Swans during the fall migration stay close together, a pair which will mate for life. The largest numbers of breeding pairs of Trumpeter Swans are found in Alaska where they prefer the large shallow ponds and the slow moving rivers.
The fall colors of the long grasses along the edge of the pond, create a prime location for these Trumpeter Swans as aquatic plants make up their main source of nutrition. Some Trumpeter Swans migrate to and from the Pacific Coast and parts of the United States where they fly in a V-shape while the released populations are usually non-migratory.
The male Trumpeter Swans are about 57-64 inches in height and weigh about 26 pounds while the females are slightly smaller and measure 55-59 inches and are approximately 22 pounds. Their long necks and snow white plumage are easily seen over the top of the grasses while swimming around the pond. A black bill outlined in a salmon-pink shade and short black legs are the only parts on the Trumpeter Swan which change the white coloring on this graceful looking bird.
