The lakes and wetlands region in the northeastern portion of the Kenai Peninsula Wildlife Refuge in Alaska, USA provides a prime habitat for various species of migrating breeding birds. This Trumpeter Swan in flight is one of the types of birds which spends time at the Kenai Peninsula Wildlife Refuge during migration.
The Trumpeter Swan is the largest North American bird with a pure white plumage except for its feet, legs and parts of its head which are black in color. They have a dense layer of down which allows the Trumpeter Swan to withstand temperatures reaching as cold as -30 degrees.
As this Trumpeter Swan takes flight near the surface of the water along its migration route, it is easy to see the massive wingspan on this bird which can reach nearly 10 feet. The breeding habitat of the Trumpeter Swan is in northwestern and central North America where the largest number of pairs are found in Alaska. Back and forth to the Pacific coast and areas of the United States is the migration route the Trumpeter Swans take, flying in the same V-shape formation that Canadian Geese do.
