An Eskimo man, Captain Charles Hopson, waving his flag while standing atop a bowhead whale which he hunted in the Chukchi Sea near Barrow, Alaska. Aboriginal subsistence whaling is regulated by the International Whaling Commission and the Eskimos find that hunting whales is important in their culture and traditions.
Bowhead whale hunting has been done by the Eskimos for thousand of years and today there are still nine whaling villages in Alaska. The waving of the flag is part of the tradition when men come home from the open seas with a slaughtered whale.
