The frozen waters of the Sea of Japan glisten as the stunning sunset colors fill the sky with shades of yellow, pink, orange and purple just before the sun completely disappears across the horizon. In the midst of these beautiful hues, a flock of Steller's Sea Eagles take time to group together atop a large mass of ice which sits in the Sea of Japan.
A large bird of prey known as the heaviest eagle in the world, the Steller's Sea Eagle will spend its winter in Japan to avoid freezing in the Eastern Part of Russia. These birds must be close to the open water as their main source of food is mostly made up of fish, two favorites being salmon and trout.
Their immense size with dark brown to black plumage adorned with a white tail, shoulders, thighs, forehead and crown look beautiful silhouetted on the ice pack as a sunset settles in over the Sea of Japan.
