Two Steller Sea Lions are resting on a buoy in Orca Bay near Cordova, Alaska while the other one sits up and checks out his surroundings. Steller Sea Lions will find just about anywhere to spend time resting whether it be on the rocky coastal shores, on islands or buoys which remain anchored in the water.
After feeding on a wide range of fish and sea life in the water of Orca Bay, these Steller Sea Lions find the perfect resting place on the buoy without swimming back to shore. These Steller Sea Lions are adults as they are lighter in color, usually being a pale yellow hue to a tawny and sometimes red color.
Fully grown females will be about 8 feet in length and weigh about 660 pounds while the males grow to about 11 feet in length and can weigh between 1200 and 2500 pounds, a considerable size difference. As the buoy continues to rock in the water, the Steller Sea Lions find the movement quite calming where they could remain resting in the middle of Orca Bay for several hours.
