During the summer, a rain storm sweeps through Tongass National Forest in Alaska, USA and a large haul out of Steller Sea Lions rest atop the coastal rocks of Sail Island. Most of the Steller Sea Lions lay peacefully on this large rock, while the odd few must make themselves heard as they raise themselves up on their flippers.
The sea lions love to sun bath and a particular favorite location is Sail Island where boaters can watch these animals in their natural environment. Recent aerial studies have been conducted which shows these mammals as being a threatened species as numbers have declined considerably since 2006. Sail Island is a popular haul out area for the Steller Sea Lions and researchers keep a close eye on the numbers year after year.
