Steller Sea Lions are often seen by water vessels lounging about the coastline of Unalaska Island in the Bering Sea in Alaska, USA. This group of Steller Sea Lions are on alert as a boat sits in the water off of Unalaska Island watching these massive marine mammals in their natural habitat. As the sea lions sun bathe, any disturbance will attract their attention and they immediately become aware and on alert.
Adult Steller Sea Lions are a pale yellow to a tawny hue in color and while lounging about these coastline rookeries, the mature male sea lions will defend and establish their territory with between 3-20 females during the breeding season. The male Steller Sea Lions are very aggressive and territorial and are not only dangerous amongst their own kind, but can easily cause serious damage to humans.
Unalaska Island forms part of the east Aleutian Islands in the southwest region of Alaska, USA and is a windy, treeless region where many of the Aleut people fish and trap. Being the 14th largest island in the USA covering an area of 1,051 square miles, the coastline is rugged and adorned with hundreds of inlets and peninsulas making the area ideal for resting grounds for the Steller Sea Lions.
