A spruce tree set in the wilderness of Healy, Alaska in the USA finds a nice resting spot for a Spruce Grouse who peeks out to see what is approaching. The Spruce Grouse is a permanent resident in Healy as it only relocates a short distance during the winter months. Their breeding grounds are the boreal forests or Taiga in Alaska and Canada where they build their nests in the thick growth on the forest floor.
The mottled brown coloring with dark and white bars on its underside on this Spruce Grouse identifies it as a female. The male Spruce Grouse is mainly grey with a black breast and white bars along with a bright red patch over its eyes. Their main source of energy comes from the buds on the spruce or pine trees along with small pebbles which aids in their digestive system.
