A beautiful picture of a Spicebush Swallowtail as it sits on a flowering branch in Texas Hill Country in Comfort, Texas. This species of butterfly is very similar to other dark colored swallowtail butterflies, except these ones can be recognized by their spoon shaped tails and bright colored hindwings, blue on females, green on males.
The adult Spicebush Swallowtail Butterfly will feed on various types of nectar from azaleas, japanese honeysuckles, milkweeds, jewelweed, dogbane, lantana, mimosa and thistle flowers. The colors on this butterfly are clearly visible in this picture while it remains idle while feeding.
Forests of deciduous trees, fields, roadsides, yards, swamps and parks are a favorite place for the Spicebush Swallowtail. The eggs are laid on the underside of host plant leaves with caterpillars living in folded leaves and when they emerge into a butterfly, their wingspan grows to be about 3-4 inches across.
