The Gray Wolf is a popular species of wildlife found throughout Yellowstone National Park and this solitary animal stops to check out what is lurking behind him. The Gray Wolf has sharp senses with their sense of smell being one of the best and they can easily sniff out any unwanted predators in the area. Their hearing is extremely keen and any unfamiliar sounds will also catch the attention of the Gray Wolf.

The Gray Wolf is a social animal that hunts, travels and lives with many others which is referred to as a pack and seeing this solitary animal is a good sign that other wolves are within a close proximity. An average pack size is between 4 and 7 animals but there have been packs known to have over 30 wolves.

A male Gray Wolf is usually about 26-38 inches in height, 48 to 58 inches in length and weighs in anywhere between 40 to 175 pounds. Most of the wolves found in North America are a gray coloring with a mixture of brown, black and white depending on the season.

People visiting Yellowstone National Park can often hear the howl of the gray wolves off in the distance. The last Gray Wolf disappeared from Yellowstone National Park in 1926 after being shot but they were reintroduced to the park in 1995 and after many years, the success rate of the wolves is far above what was predicted.

The Gray Wolf is not a common species of wildlife seen throughout Yellowstone National Park but for those looking to catch a glimpse of one, the Lamar Valley during the early morning hours or close to darkness is the best time to find them.
