On a cold winter night along the Iditarod trail in Alaska, USA during the 2005 race, a sled dog finds the ideal sleeping spot at the Takotna checkpoint. The sled dog has earned a well deserved night of sleeping and needs it to prepare him for the early morning hours when the Iditarod race continues.
In the backdrop, a warm building marks the spot for the Takotna checkpoint and scattered across the surface of the snow are sleds and equipment needed while partaking in the Iditarod. Starting in Anchorage, Alaska in the USA and finishing up in Nome, the Iditarod Sled Dog Race spans for a distance of 1,150 miles over some extremely rough terrain. Many competitors finish within 10 days while others can take up to 17 before completing this adventure.
It is mandatory for the mushers and sled dog teams to stop at as many as 3 checkpoints along the Iditarod trail and enjoy a good meal, sleeping and relaxing which is what the entire team awaits. Takotna checkpoint is considered to be one of the best as an older couple makes homemade pies and good meals every year for the mushers who make this a stopover.
