The silhouette of a sled dog is picturesque as he stands along the shores of a frozen lake as the sunset colors highlight the sky and reflect off the ice. Some of the prettiest Alaskan sunsets take place in the winter where temperatures drop to well below freezing.
None of this matters to a sled dog as they are accustomed to this type of weather with their double coat, padded feet and muscular build. Sled dogs are commonly used as a means of transportation in the cold winter months in Alaska.
The sled dogs are also used in the greatest race on earth, the Iditarod. This is a race of 1150 miles over the roughest ranges, frozen landscapes and dense forests with some of the most beautiful scenery found throughout Alaska which sled dogs and mushers cross. It takes them anywhere from 10 to 17 days with a team of 12 to 16 sled dogs.
