A harem of Steller Sea Lions create quite a racket as they haul themselves out onto the rocks on Sail Island in Tongass National Forest in Alaska, USA. The approximate population of Steller Sea Lions is 242,000 in the Alaska region but during the mid-1970's to mid-1980's the decrease in sea lions was approximately fifty percent.
Telling female and male Steller Sea Lions apart is fairly simple as the males are noticeably larger in size. An adult male Steller Sea Lion weighs between approximately 1,300 and 2,500 pounds while the females only reach a maximum weight of about 660 pounds.
