One Steller Sea Lion baring his teeth appears a little more aggressive than the rest of his group while swimming in the waters near the haulout by Sail Island in Tongass National Forest in Alaska, USA. The Steller Sea Lion is considered to be the king of the sea lions, usually traveling in a small group or alone unless it is mating or birthing season.
The long, wet whiskers come below the mouth of this Steller Sea Lion and while baring his teeth, one can see how sharp they are which they use for eating their prey. They snag their prey out of the water with their teeth, eating whatever is available with the help of their strong jaws.
In total, the Steller Sea Lion will have between 34-38 teeth with the first and second upper incisors being small and the third, outer incisors being sharp and canine like. Male sea lions are easier to distinguish by their broader, higher foreheads, flatter snouts and darker, tuftier hair around their large necks. The females grow to between 600 and 1100 pounds while the males average between 1300 and 2500 pounds.
Sail Island is a common place to watch the Steller Sea Lions fight amongst each other during breeding season and try to claim their territory.
