Known for its long forked black tail, the Scissortailed Flycatcher is a small bird with gray upper parts and light underparts with pinkish colored flanks. Under the wings and at the shoulders, there are red patches with the females being slightly shorter than the males.
They prefer a habitat in open shrubby country with trees scattered about where the female builds a cup nest on a branch or telephone poles. Four or five eggs are incubated for 12-14 days and need approximately 14 days before the young can leave their nest on their own.
The male will help in the feeding process with the young birds but the female is the primary caretaker. The Scissortailed Flycatcher is a socially monogamous bird and they feed mainly on insects and a few fruits and berries. The Scissortailed Flycatcher will sit on a perch and catch their prey in flight like this adult bird who waits patiently on the barbed wire in a open field in Texas Hill Country in Comfort, Texas in the USA.
