The Rocky Mountain Elk is a mammal seen all year in Yellowstone National Park with this picture being captured as a large male wanders in the midst of a snow storm. Elk are plentiful in Yellowstone National Park and are often seen traveling in large groups during the summer, but the males seem to keep to themselves more, especially in the winter months when food can be scarce.
This male struts through the forest dodging the snowflakes while showing off his majestic rack of antlers. The antlers on a male elk can be as long as 1.1 to 1.5 meters when measured from tip to tip.
The Rocky Mountain Elk must be on alert for grizzlies and wolves during the winter months especially if they are weak. If one lags behind the rest of the herd, a grizzly can easily stalk an elk and make the animal its next meal.
During the rutting season in the fall in Yellowstone National Park, many of the male Rocky Mountain Elk are found in Madison and Gibbon meadows or around Mammoth Hot Springs. During the other seasons, the Madison, Firehole, Gibbon Rivers, Lamar Valley and Hayden Valley are the most popular hangouts for these massive animals.
