A Rocky Mountain Elk calf was recently born in the wilderness of Yellowstone National Park and nestles peacefully amongst the greenery of the forest. The females usually have their calves in late May or June so that the summer months give them plenty of time to prepare for the cold winter months.
The fur on a Rocky Mountain Elk calf is adorned with white spots which will quickly fade as the calf matures. The mother will feed the calf for the first month exclusively on her milk which many continue on and off until the baby reaches about 9 months old.
