The Rio Grande Wild Turkey is a bird native to North America and this particular one is seen walking amongst the wilderness in Texas Hill Country in Comfort, Texas in the USA. The red throat on the Wild Turkey is the first sign that this bird is a male along with its featherless head which can change from red to blue within minutes.
A long fan shaped tail on the Wild Turkey is another prominent feature on these birds and on the Rio Grande Wild Turkey the tips and lower back feathers are a light tan color. The feathers on other species of Wild Turkeys have areas which are red, purple, green, copper, bronze and gold on the males whereas the female has a duller coloring to it.
A fully mature Wild Turkey can weigh between 11 and 24 pounds and measure about 39-49 inches in height. The Rio Grande is a subspecies of Wild Turkey and ranges from Texas to Oklahoma, Kansas, New Mexico, Colorado, Oregon and central and western California and into a few of the northeastern states.
Their favorite habitats are in brush areas near streams, rivers or amongst the forests consisting of mesquite pine and scrub oak. Here they feed on acorns, nuts and various nut trees along with berries, roots and insects but their main diet is grass.
