The scenery is breathtaking while driving the Richardson Highway in Alaska, USA during the Autumn as the landscape is flourishing in an array of color. In this particular spot, the backdrop is decorated with the snow covered peaks of Mount Drum, a statovolcano located in the Wrangell Mountains.
Mount Drum was last known to be active between 650,000 and 240,000 years ago when various dacitic domes were formed and rises above the tundra landscape to a height of 12,010 feet. There have been many expeditions up Mount Drum and it is suitable for intermediate climbers or experienced novices who have prepared themselves for a real challenge.
The Richardson Highway runs 368 miles from Valdez to Fairbanks with some of the most breathtaking scenery Alaska has to offer. What began as a pack trail in the 1800's, the Richardson Highway has now become a popular and very scenic route.
