During spring in Texas Hill Country, two fuzzy chicks belonging to the Red-tailed Hawk species, squawk amongst themselves waiting for the return of their parents. The parents, mainly the female, have incubated the eggs for at least 28 days and after a lengthy hatching period, two chicks are born which are usually fairly undeveloped.
These Red-tailed Hawk chicks are then carefully tended to by the mother while the male is out searching for food for both the female and his young. On his return, the female will rip the food into small sections, an ongoing process for approximately 42 days. After this time, the chicks will take periodic short flights on their own for approximately another 10 weeks. They are now ready to face the world alone where they hunt and fly without anyone's assistance.
