Nestled in its nest in the wilderness of Texas Hill Country in Comfort, Texas in the USA, a Red-tailed Hawk chick waits patiently for the return of its mother. This type of bird breeds from central Alaska, throughout the Yukon and Northwest Territories to the east in southern Quebec and into the Maritime Provinces of Canada, south Florida, the West Indies and into Central America.
At around two years of age, the Red-tailed Hawk will reach sexual maturity and will find a mate which it will stay with for many years. The nest is usually built in a large tree at least 4-21 meters off the ground or on a cliff ledge at higher elevations. The nest is about 28-38 inches in diameter and can sometimes be 3 feet tall which is made out of twigs, bark, pine needles and any types of plant lining material.
The female will lay about 1-3 eggs in late March or April where they are incubated most of time by the female bird. After 28-35 days, the eggs will hatch over a period of 2-4 days and each chick will eventually come out to its new life in the wilderness of Texas Hill Country in Comfort, Texas. The mother will tear food into small pieces for the chick for approximately 42-46 days until each of the babies begin to venture out on short flights. For approximately 10 weeks, the chick will learn how to become an excellent flier and hunter until it is ready to fend in the wilderness on its own.
