While a Red-striped Ribbon Snake makes his way across the jagged rocks in Texas Hill Country, he stops to stare at the camera long enough for his picture to be taken. The plates atop of the head of the snake are broader than the rest of his body and a light colored vertical spot is always prominent in front of their eyes.
A stripe runs down the length of the body, which is where the name Red-striped Ribbon originated from, and it is always found on scale rows 3 and 4 above the belly. The Red-striped Ribbon Snake is a non-venomous snake and resides around rivers, marshes, swamps, ponds and ditches where they feed on tadpoles, goldfish, frogs, toads, their favorite meal being a cricket frog.
