Often photographers will find the Red-spotted Purple Butterfly bordering clearings in the forest and along shorelines and paths. This is where they like to rest on the lower branches of trees or on the ground where a picture can easily be taken.
Besides the red-spotted purple on the tips of each forewing, the butterfly is mainly black in color with luminous blue shades which can be clearly seen in the proper lighting, along with the red spots which are located underneath.
As a caterpillar, the Red-spotted Purple Butterfly is humped with a cream coloring and a dark colored saddle along with two bristles located behind its head. The caterpillars are often found on aspens, poplars, cherry, hawthorns and apple trees.
The Red-spotted Purple Butterfly is almost a twin to the Pipevine Swallowtail Butterfly except it has no tail and swallowtails are bigger in size than this particular species. Butterflies have been admired by humans for thousands of years, as people find them to be one of the most intriguing and beautiful insects around.
