An adult Red-legged Kittiwake and its chick perched in their nest on the vertical sea cliffs in the Pribilof Islands in Alaska, USA. As the adult watches over her chick, the profile of her curved yellow beak is very prominent. During the breeding season, the Red-legged Kittiwake has an entirely white body except for its gray back and gray wings with black tips and its bright red legs. After breeding season, they have a black mark on each side of their head located behind their eyes.
In the Pribilof Islands in Alaska, USA, the largest colony of the Red-legged Kittiwakes are found, but this has decreased significantly since the onset of this colony in the 1970's. There are four locations in the Bering Sea where the Red Legged Kittiwakes are found, the Pribilof Islands (mainly on George Island), Bogoslof Islands, Buldir Island and Russia's Commander Islands.
The Red-legged Kittiwakes are one of the few species of seagull which the name properly relates to as they take flight during the winter months and leave the area of the Bering Sea. Researchers are unaware of the direction these birds take during this time but a few reports have seen them coming from the northern Gulf of Alaska.
