A very common species of turtle is the Red-eared Slider, not only in the wilderness but many people find these turtles ideal for a common household pet. When kept as pets, the Red-eared Sliders are known to be aggressive and should be kept in a tank alone as they tend to attack anything smaller than themselves.
Yellow stripes line the neck and face on the Red-eared Slider Turtle with the shell being made up of darker lines and swirls. On either side of the turtle's head, just behind the eye, there is a red spot which makes it easy to recognize a Red-eared Slider.
A female Red-eared Slider turtle grows to be an inch or two longer than the male, reaching a length of between 10-12 inches. They are typically shy and will quickly slide off any rock when approached, but the turtle in this picture does not seem too concerned about its surroundings.
The Red-eared Slider prefers warmer climates and resides around water such as ponds, lakes, marshes, creeks and streams where it can peacefully find a rock to climb on and bask in the sunshine.
