The Pussy Willows produce small, furry buds appearing in the early Spring which also represents that the first sign of Spring in Alaska, USA is on its way. The furry buds, also known as catkins appear before the leaves do and look like small kittens which is how the pussy willows got their name.
The orange Lichen is a type of fungus which grows on the surface of rocks or wood requiring an appropriate amount of sunlight to grow. Lichen often thrives in higher places where many plants will not reach and competing for the sun is not an issue.
The orange Lichen in this picture adds an excellent backdrop for the pussy willows which are highlighted in the foreground.
