Weaving in every direction across the arctic coastal plain along the Beaufort Sea coast are gravel pads and oil pipelines which are part of the Prudhoe Bay Oilfields. These large oilfields on the North Slope of Alaska are the largest throughout the USA and North America which covers the arctic coastal plain for approximately 213,000 acres.
Starting in the 1960's at Prudhoe Bay, these oilfields were first exploited and in 1974 there was believed to be about 10 billion barrels of oil here. These oilfields have doubled the amount of recoverable oil over the East Texas oilfield, the second largest to Prudhoe Bay. There have already been 10 billion barrels of oil pulled from these fields with at least another 3 billion to go.
Using the Alaska pipeline, the oil is transported to tankers where it is then moved to the lower states.
Industrial development on gravel pads and oil pipelines snake across the tundra, all part of the Prudhoe Bay Oilfields built on the flat tundra of the arctic coastal plain along the Beaufort Sea Coast
