The sunlight sparkles off the snow and ice covered landscape of Byron Glacier in the Chugach National Forest in Alaska, USA while an iceberg floats aimlessly around Portage Lake. A soft glow of blue emits from the iceberg as it slowly changes shape and melts into the cold waters of Portage Lake.
The surface of the lake is often filled with large icebergs, some which are more than 50 years old, as they break away from the surrounding glaciers.
The scenery is beautiful from the lakeshore, but many want to explore Byron Glacier and follow the trail for about a mile which stops at the base of the glacier. The trail made up of small pebbles, is a fairly easy walk and in great condition with breathtaking scenery surrounding the area.
