A stunning sunset paints the sky in orange hues as a Brown Pelican in flight soars below the setting sun. The silhouette of the Pelican shows off its long bill and large wing span reaching between 6 and 8.2 feet.
The Brown Pelican is the smallest species of pelican, but still recognized as a large bird weighing about 6 to 12 pounds when fully matured. In the silhouette of the sunset lighting, it is hard to see the markings on the pelican, but this type of Pelican has a grayish brown body with white above its head and neck. The juvenile birds still have white underparts which can be seen by the lighting of the orange sky on this bird in flight.
The bill on the Pelican is one which is very distinctive and long, often being longer than the head and on the underside of it, a large pouch of skin dangles. In this pouch, the Pelican can hold at least double the amount of food which can be held in its stomach.
The Pelican became more popular and recognized by children after it was used as a main character in the Walt Disney move "Finding Nemo". This beautiful silhouette of a Pelican against the sunset illuminated sky is one which is a keepsake.
