On June 6th, 1912, Mt. Novarupta, located in Katmai National Park in Alaska, USA, exploded into a ferocious volcano leaving behind the dacite cone which is seen in this aerial picture. Snow covered peaks of the surrounding mountains are slowly baring themselves as the Alaskan sun beats down on them during the long, summer days.
The volcano erupted for many weeks, spewing 700 feet of ash around the area killing off all signs of plant life and damaging any trees in its path. Before the eruption began, several earth rumblings were felt and for days after, a thick layer of ash blanketed Katmai National Park with the remnants reaching as for as Vancouver.
Hikers make their way up Mt. Novarupta where they can see the dacite cone at a close range, while other visitors prefer the aerial view of the volcano.
