Being one of the smallest mice in Texas, USA, the Northern Pygmy Mouse has spread throughout many regions with this picture taken in Texas Hill Country in Comfort. This mouse is not restricted to Texas, but their distribution throughout the state ranges from along the coast, to the central parts and into western Texas.
The Northern Pygmy Mouse loves the grassy regions but will also reach oil fields, pastures and along the sides of highways or railroad tracks where they reside with other types of rodents such as cotton rats and harvest mice. Only growing to about 98 mm in length and weighing about 8 grams, the Northern Pygmy Mouse can be easily missed while scurrying through different areas.
As cute as this animal appears in this picture, the Northern Pygmy Mouse reproduces all year long with litters being anywhere from 1 to 5 in size. With their big beady eyes, smallish ears and fur being a mixture of gray, black and brown, this small rodent can become quite a pest.
