During the winter, snow blankets the landscape around the Russian Orthodox Church and its cemetery in the small village of Ninilchik in Alaska, USA. The Russian Orthodox Church was designed by a local architect and the building was dedicated in 1901.
A Russian Orthodox missionary and his family moved to the village of Ninilchik in 1847 where Russian style log homes were built and businesses were created and today, many descendants of the family still reside in Ninilchik. A strong Russian Orthodox following is still found here and many still attend services at this historic church.
On the Kenai Peninsula, the Russian Orthodox Church is one of the most photographed buildings. During the winter, some beautiful pictures can be taken when the mountain peaks tower above the church and a unique lighting reflects off the snow covered landscape.
